Deal Brag!

My good friend Kelly was kind enough to come to my couponing class recently. Since then, she has needed just a little help getting her feet wet in the coupon world. I was so excited when she contacted me about getting together to make a Smith's shopping list and hit the sale this week. You can see my haul below (Kelly's was VERY similar):

What's pictured?

10 boxes of cereal
4 boxes of Hefty baggies
2 bottles of laundry soap
1 canister of Kool-Aid
4 boxes of Pasta (FREE!)
4 boxes of Capri Sun
4 cans of biscuits
2 bottles of body wash
1 pkg bar soap
1 box dishwasher tabs (FREE!)
1 bottle rinse agent
3 bottles of asprin (FREE!)
1 gallon of milk

Kelly and I had so much fun shopping together! We went after the kids had gone to bed and practically had the store all to ourselves. This was a pretty casual trip for me. I went with my hair not done, no make-up, in my slipper socks with some slip-on sandals. But, after check-out we were both so pleased with our deals that I still had to get a selfie! (Sorry it's a little blurry.) It was raining, the wind was blowing my hair across my face, and I had just stepped in a big puddle, completely soaking my slipper socks... but does it look like I care?! Not when you are saving this big!!!

The bottom line? Initially my receipt says I spent $53.19 and saved 58% using $21.07 in coupons. My Fresh Value (or promotional) savings is listed at $48.59. That alone is pretty awesome. But it gets even better! With the Ibotta rebate on Dial, I got another $3 back. And Ibotta was SUPER fast. I submitted my receipt after I got home late last night, and within MINUTES I had my refund.

Also, the cashier missed a peelie-coupon for $0.50 off on my Finish dishwasher tabs, and she went to all the trouble (without my asking) to ring up the coupon and give me my coupon +tax back. She handed me $0.52.

Then, I am submitting my Finish tabs and rinse agent by mail for the "Try Finish for Free" promotion. I should get the full price of my tabs back ($3.99) and my rinse agent will cost me $0.49 in the end because it was $4.99 and I will get $4.50 back. So, take another $8.50 off the bill.

Finally, with a promotion like "Buy 6 Save $3" that is going on this week, I try REALLY hard to make sure I am buying my items in quantities of six. I check, double check, and recheck. So, I am always curious when I look at my receipt to see if I managed to make it all work out in the end. It turned out, after scanning my receipt, I got charged for an extra box of cereal that I didn't buy. *see note below I got 4 boxes of Reese's Puffs and I got charged for 5. Since I don't live in Brigham City and can't get it fixed very easily, I am not going to do anything about this. I will just chalk it up to an "oh well" moment. But, in the end, that means that if you take the cost of that one box of cereal that I never got off my receipt, I saved another $1.99 (plus tax).

So, let's do the math:

Original Receipt
Total Cost- $53.19

Fresh Value Savings- $48.59
Coupon Savings- $21.07
Total Savings- $69.66
Percent Savings- 58%

Then, let's adjust for the rebates I am getting, the missing Finish coupon that the cashier caught, and the cereal error:

Total Cost- $53.19
Finish Rebate- -$8.50
Ibotta Rebate- -$3.00
Finish Coupon- -$0.52
Cereal Error- -$1.99 plus tax

Adjusted Total Bill- $39.18 (approximate because of tax)

Adjusted Fresh Value Savings- $46.99
Adjusted Coupon Savings- $33.07
Adjusted Total Savings- $80.06
Adjusted Percent Savings-67%

New bottom line, everything you see in the picture costs $39.18 after coupons and rebates; a total savings of 67%. I used $33.07 in coupons, which is why I say, "It's like printing my own money!" I also got 38 items which averages out to just over $1 per item. I think I just turned Smith's into the dollar store!

WOOT!!!!

I would love to hear about your deal brags. You can post them on Facebook on my coupon page: www.facebook.com/queenofthescreamingdeal

Happy shopping!

*I never used to check my receipts that closely, but I have recently been amazed by how many times cashiers make little mistakes and charge me for things I don't buy. Sometimes it is as simple as the register scanning the same bar code twice so quickly that no one notices. One time, the cashier needed to enter a coupon code to give me a promotional discount (the code was something like 8506) and instead of putting in a coupon code, she entered the code in as an amount. So, I got charged $85.06 listed as some random dairy purchase that I never made! Thank goodness we caught that mistake and got it fixed, but that really would have messed up my budget!! So, it can pay to check your receipts carefully.

Deal Brag

I was SUPER excited today when I saw on Facebook that Ridley's was doing a special, one day only, double coupon day today. So, I got my coupons together and ran over to score some killer deals on cereal. Here is the breakdown:

I got six boxes of Cheerios, two boxes of Lucky Charms and one gallon of milk for $9.20!!! If I had been mentally quicker at the register, I actually could have gotten the entire thing for $8.20, but more on that in just a second.

Cheerios, I got 4 boxes for $0.67 each, and two boxes for $1.67 with double coupons(here is where I could have saved one more dollar if I had been thinking and grabbed one extra coupon I forgot about). Just FYI, I also could have gotten a couple other varieties of General Mills cereals for this particular sale, but I specifically got all Cheerios.
Lucky Charms, I got two boxes for $1.38 each with double coupons.
Milk, I got for FREE!!! (buy 6 participating cereals and get a milk free)

I saved $6 in coupons and an additional $14.56 in promotions and sales. That means if I had paid full price for EVERYTHING, it would have cost me approximately $29.76 ($8.20+$6+$14.56). I believe that means I saved 69% total! (It would have been 72% if I had remembered my other coupon...) :)

Deal Brag!

So, after looking around the house today, I discovered that we really didn't need much to get by this coming week. It was AWESOME! I still had enough fruits and veggies to get me by (thanks to my handy-dandy Debbie Meyer Green Bags and a $10-bag I got at Kent's last week). I still had a loaf of bread, and we have meat we are eating out of our freezer. So, I looked at what the great deals were for this week that my family loves, threw in some milk, bananas, and shredded carrots, and this week's grocery bill was $25.23! (That is everything in a the above picture.)

According to my receipts, I saved $16.11 at Kent's and $16.18 at Ridley's. My math skills are rusty, but I believe that means I saved 56% over paying full price, and I only needed ONE set of coupons for the Suddenly Salad. ONE!  I even picked up a couple of things not on sale. Woot! That makes me happy.

If it turns out I was wrong and my family doesn't have enough food for this week and we all die of starvation before next weekend, then this will be my final post. Goodbye cruel world! But at least I saved a lot of money!

How did you do?!

Beef! It's What's For Dinner... If I Can Afford It!

Oh, meat, meat, meat... why are your prices so high?

And if you are like me, you might only know what are "good prices" to pay for the two or three cuts of meat that you buy most often. The rest, is a mystery! I swear there seems to be at least 100 different cuts of various kinds of meat out there. How is a poor soul to keep track of it all?

That is why I sent a message to Kent's Market this week and wanted to share their response with you. I hope it is informative.

But first, what would I pay? That is so hard to say. For chicken, I try never to pay more than $2 a pound for boneless skinless chicken breasts. Any time I see this kind of chicken on sale with a price that starts with a number 1 (even if it is just $1.99 a pound) I run out to check my deep freeze and see if I need to pick up a pound or two. When it gets as low as $1.75 a pound, then I buy more. If I ever saw it for $1.50 or less, I think I would buy as much as I could fit in my freezer!

We also buy a lot of hamburger. I used to have the same rule of thumb for ground beef prices as chicken, but holding out for those "under two dollar sales" has left me with almost no hamburger in my freezer once or twice. What's a spaghetti loving girl to do with no ground beef in the house?!! So, I have had to adjust my thinking. I now figure I can buy a pound or two if I am desperate when the price is under $3 a pound. Any time I see hamburger on sale with a price that start with a number 2, I take a peek at my stash. When it is closer to $2.50 a pound, I feel pretty good about grabbing the larger ten pound bags. Anything under $2.50 would be considered an awesome stock-up price for me.

Now, I am not an authority on the subject, but those are my guidelines. Other cuts of meat are harder for me to figure out because my family just doesn't eat that much. So, here is what a manager at Kent's had to say:

Message from The Queen:
When I am grocery shopping, one of the things I have the hardest time with is knowing when all the different cuts of meat are on sale for great prices. Is there any advice you can offer to help with this? Do the really SUPER deals have special tags, special colored signs, or any way to know that it is a great time to stock up the freezer? I just can't tell.

Response from a Kent's Manager:
The meat manager had left when I saw this message, but I asked one of his guys the best way to reply to your question. He said that on Saturdays they do alot of good deals because they look at what they may be heavy on and will wheel them out on racks for quick sale. Meat prices are through the roof everywhere right now. Good for cow farmers not so good for us. We have alot of Saturday-Only sales once or twice a month and those are great times to stock up. We post our ad on Facebook each week and typically the front page items are the hottest, so keep your eyes out for those blow out sales. We are having one this Saturday. Take a look at it. Hopefully this helps a little. Thanks, Layne Julander ( store manager) **Also don't ever be afraid to ring the bell in the meat department and ask them to educate you on what is the best deal.

What Would I Buy?

One of the things I hear the most often from my friends is that they want to know what my grocery list for the week will be. Or, in other words, "What would I buy?" this week to get all my good deals. It's a hard question to answer if you are trying to apply my list to your family's needs. Everyone is so different in what their family will eat, what they need, and what they already have a stock pile of.

But, in general, I think I can point out some of my favorite "screaming deals" for the week and answer that question broadly speaking.

So, if it seems helpful, I might try to post each week what I would buy if my stock pile was low. It might not be what I will buy in reality (because, let's face it, when you have a stock pile of deodorant or shampoo or toothpaste like I have pictured below, you almost don't really want to pick up anymore even if it's free... almost... heh, heh), but it would be things I WOULD buy if I needed it for my stock pile (noting that I might pick up other deals too in smaller quantities, but this post is focused only my stocking my stash, so they need to be GREAT deals).

But first, why I might not get shampoo, conditioners, toothpaste or deodorant...

I have 16 bottles of quality shampoo or conditioner that I got for around $0.50 each over the course of three months.

I have twelve sticks of women's deodorant (that doesn't include the men's I got for Scott) that I got for $0.30-$0.50 each. At about 1 stick a month or less, I have at least a year's worth, or more!

At about $0.25 each, I have ten tubes of toothpaste. Again, that has to last at least a year or more I would think.
So, for this week, which, in the grocery world, started yesterday, June 18th, 2014, here is what I would snag for my stock pile (of course, the produce isn't really a stash item, but they are great deals so I WOULD buy them):

Kents-
  • Green grapes at $0.98 lb
  • Watermelon, seedless at $0.25 lb
  • Limes at $0.10 ea
  • Meadow Gold frozen novelties at $0.99 ea
  • Western Family 6 oz. yogurt $0.25 Saturday only
  • Alberto Vo5 shampoo or conditioner 12.5 oz $0.76, use SS 6/1 coupon for $0.50 off 2 and get them for $0.51 each. If you are taking 4 newspapers, you could get as many as 8 bottles. Of course, this isn't my favorite brand of shampoo and conditioner, so I would probably only get a couple of bottles if my stock pile was in desperate need and wait for better brands to go on sale. But it is a great place to start if you are about to run out or need to start a stash.
Ridley's-
The sale at Ridley's this week is a bit confusing and I haven't been in the store to ask about the details. The buy 8 save $5 deal is clearly marked as Mix and Match, but the buy 10 and get them for $0.87 each is not marked as Mix and Match, which makes a big difference in what I would pick up. So, here goes...
  • Alberto Vo5 shampoo or conditioner 12.5 oz $0.78 (but I would probably get it at Kent's if I could because it's $0.02 cheaper there), use SS 6/1 coupon for $0.50 off 2 and get them for $0.53 each. If you are taking 4 newspapers, you could get as many as 8 bottles. Of course, this isn't my favorite brand of shampoo and conditioner, so I would probably only get a couple of bottles if my stock pile was in desperate need and wait for better brands to go on sale. But it is a great place to start if you are about to run out.
  • Milk, gallon 1%, 2%, or skim price matched to Kent's for $2.69 a gallon and then submit to Ibotta for an additional $0.25 off, making it $2.44. One gallon limit on the Ibotta rebate. If I needed more than one gallon, then I would just pick up more at the Kent's price at Ridley's unless Ridley's has a lower unadvertised price this week.
  • Hamburger Helper for $0.85, use the online coupon for $0.50/1 twice and get two boxes for $0.35 each with the two-online-coupon limit. (remember to get at least 8 items total that are included in the sale)
  • Suddenly Salad for $0.85, use SS 6/8 coupon $0.50/2 and get at least two boxes for $0.60 each. With four newspaper subscriptions, I could get as many as 8 boxes because I have four identical coupons. In that case, I could satisfy by 8 item requirement with only Suddenly Salad, or use the Suddenly Salad to fill in the needed items to make my 8).
  • Bugles, Gardettos or Chex Mix for $1.12, use the online coupon for $0.50/2 and get them for $0.87 each. Get either 2 or 4 bags with the two-online-coupon limit. (remember to get at least 8 items total that are included in the sale)
  • If the buy 10 sale allows Mix and Match, I would pick up the Chef Boyardee for $0.67 ea with the online coupon for $1/4. With the two-online-coupon limit, you could get as many as 8 cans. If that was all I really wanted, then I might just throw in two more cans at the $0.87 price to get my 10 item limit. However, if I can get other things to make my ten, I might not pick up more than 4 cans because I am sure I can get this same item another time for closer to $0.50 or less.
  • If the buy 10 sale allows for Mix and Match, I would pick up the Barilla pasta for $0.32 with the SS 6/8 coupon for $0.55/1. Since I have four newspapers, I would get four boxes and make up my ten item limit with something else. You can often get pasta for less than $0.50 a package. But if I was really low or completely out and HAD to get ten boxes for the sale, I would pick up the Barilla pasta using this same coupon scenario, but at ten boxes and only 4 coupons, it would average out to $0.65 each.
Smith's-
I don't make it to Smith's in either Logan or Brigham City more than about once or twice a month if I am lucky. BUT, if I was going to make it to Smith's this week, I would get:
  • Pine Sol $1.99, use $0.50/1 online coupon AND $0.75/1 Ibotta rebate making it $0.74.
  • Arm and Hammer Detergent $4.99, use $3/2 online coupon making them $3.49 each
  • Dial Soap 2 ct $1 (or 10 for $10, but you DON'T have to buy ten items... they are really only $1 each), use $1/1 Ibotta rebate and get it for FREE! This deal seems to be a bit "ongoing", so I would do this each week until I had my bar soap stocked up, or else until the deal went away. Sorry, only one Ibotta rebate available each week.
  • 7-Up 2 liters $1, use $1/2 online coupon making them $0.50 each.
  • Tillamook Cheese 2 lb loaf $5.99 (if you MUST have Tillamook... otherwise, wait for cheaper cheese)
  • Yoplait Yogurt $0.50, use Smith's digital coupon on that you load on your shopper's card for $0.40/6, making them $0.43 each.
  • Oscar Mayer Lunchables $1.00
  • Powerade, 32 oz. $0.50 each (love to have this on hand when we are sick)
  • Lay's Stax $1.00, use Smith's digital coupon for $1/4 making them $0.75 each.
  • Friday Freebie (not available until Friday the 20th) from both the Smith's website and SavingStar.
So, that's it. If I was completely out and trying to stock up, these are the things I would grab. I hope that helps you decide what is a really GREAT deal.

What would you buy? Anything I missed?!

Check Your Red Plum Date Before Filing!

Anyone else notice that this week's Red Plum is dated for LAST Sunday, 6/15, instead of this upcoming Sunday? Just make sure you file your coupons correctly so you can find them again later! The theory is, Red Plum is adjusting their distribution timing and that is why we didn't get one last week (because we got it today instead) even though it wasn't any kind of holiday week.

Let's see how all of this continues to shake out.

I love Aveeno and Neutrogena products. Be sure to snag their $2 and $3 rebates. The Neutrogena sunblock items are my FAVORITE. They are so light weight and non-greasy. It is seriously the only sunscreen I will use on my face anymore. Because it is a little more costly then some sunscreens, I don't share.  Shhh!!! :) They also have SPF 100, which I got, because I burn so easy!

Did I Really Save That Much?!!!

So, my mother saw my Facebook post about what I saved at Smith's this Friday and was skeptical. Of course, I had to explain that in my picture I am missing my two bottles of laundry detergent, but the total savings was accurate. She just said, "That doesn't look like $101 in groceries to me." Do you feel the same?

Well, I wanted to see for myself if the math on my receipt really added up, so I made a spreadsheet and sure enough, everything is exactly as it seems! Wanna a see for yourself? Here is a link to my spreadsheet:

Also, it dawned on me that I used the tax from my receipt for both the price I paid and the price I "would have paid" but in reality I think I would have paid even MORE in tax because the items would have cost more and tax is calculated based on a percentage of the price. Utah has two different sales taxes depending on the kinds of items you buy, which is too confusing for me to figure out, but the total cost probably would have been over $101 with the tax figured correctly... So, even better!!!

I Love the $10 Bag!!!

As some of you may know, I used to do Bountiful Baskets. But then Kent's started doing their $10 bags, and I haven't looked back since! I can often get one or two bags and have them last me until the next $10 sale, so it works out perfectly for me.

Kent's had $10 bags last week that were unadvertised, so I was SUPER excited when I walked in the store and found out. They also had a $10 bag this week too! I could have stuffed my bag even fuller and gotten a couple more items, but we are still working on last week's bag so I didn't want to go too crazy. That being said, here is a picture of this week's bag:

Like I said, I could have thrown in another bag of carrots, or 4-5 more apples, or some more lemons, but we still have apples, carrots and limes from last week so I didn't try too hard to "stuff" my bag to brimming. It was full... just not "spill over" full.

I love how I can pick the produce that my family will eat and that I get the very best of what I can find available. Those two differences make the $10 bag so much better than Bountiful Baskets, in my opinion. So, everyone go grab yours and do a happy dance when you see them in the future like I do!

Happy Shopping!

Deal Brag

I would love to know about the great deals you guys are finding around town, so I thought I would share my GREAT shopping trip to Smith's yesterday. Bottom line, the total bill at regular price would have been $101.92 for everything in the picture below, plus two bottles of Gain laundry detergent that some how managed not to get pictured...:

What did I pay, you ask?

$33.71!

That is a savings of $68.21 or 69%.

It breaks down to $37.21 in "Fresh Value Saving" (or, in other words, the savings I got from shopping the sales and using my Fresh Values card) AND $31 in manufacturer's coupons. Yes, that's right, $31 in coupons! (When I was getting my list ready, I told Scott, "It's like printing my own money." (Toy Story 2 reference)).

Everything in the picture was on sale, but here are the highlights.

Highlights:
